The question that slows our projects down most often is also the one I like most in meetings. It comes almost always from someone in IT: is it even safe to let those machines into the network?

I know many suppliers treat it as a delay. I actually like it. And honestly, not because we would have a neat answer ready.

Why the question is a fair one

The question is simply fair. An industrial OT network is a different world from an office IT network. When something breaks in the office, you restart a computer and move on. When something breaks in the hall, production stops. So the person asking about security is not doing it to complicate anyone's life. They are protecting the company.

In practice the hard questions look like this: how do the networks stay separated, what exactly flows out, who has access to what, and what happens when someone leaves. A more reliable signal than the budget

Over time I have noticed one thing. Where IT asks hard questions before the purchase, projects tend to live long. And conversely, where security troubles nobody until something happens, the rest usually has no owner either. For me, that question in a meeting is a more reliable signal about the customer than the budget we are discussing.

So if someone from IT slows down your project with an uncomfortable question next time, they may just be doing you a favour.
