The most honest question of the whole project is never asked in a meeting. It comes aside, at the machine, once the managers step away. And it deserves an honest answer, not evasion.
When machine monitoring is being deployed, there is one question you will never get in a meeting. And if you are just a supplier to the people in the hall, you will not get it at all, the operators will keep it to themselves and draw their own conclusions. It comes only once they trust you a little. Aside, at the machine, when the managers step away: and will you be watching us through this?
It is the most honest question of the whole project. And in its own way a compliment, silence would be worse. It deserves an honest answer, not evasion.
We measure the machine, not the person
Our answer when deploying the WorkSys.Space platform is: we measure the machine, not the person. Temperatures, consumption, downtime, cycles. Not who stood where and for how long. And I know the line can technically be moved, which is exactly why it has to be said out loud and hold.
What happens next
What happens next is the interesting part. Where the answer lands clearly and management keeps it, people get used to the data surprisingly fast. And after a while something happens that I did not expect the first time: the operators start wanting the data themselves.
The typical story goes like this. The line is down and without data, the search for a culprit happens at the machine, because someone has to explain the stoppage. Then the number shows the line was down because of missing material, and the whole unpleasant debate disappears. The data that first looked like surveillance starts protecting the people at the machines. The operator no longer needs anyone to take his word for it. He has a number.
And then there are companies where monitoring was deployed quietly and people discovered it on their own. There, trust will not grow any more. Without it even the best data is dead, because nobody believes it and every number gets disputed.
So if I had one piece of advice about monitoring, it would not be technical: answer the question from the machine before anyone asks it. And mean it.
